R.I.P. Flashforward (2009-2010)

While Flashforward has not been taken off the air, it has died in my mind.

That gripping piece of poetry was written by me, one minute ago.  I have a way with words.  Just like Flashforward had a way with ruining a fantastic story idea. This is not based on bias.  In fact, I was an incredulous supporter of the show up until this past week’s episode, “Queen Sacrifice”.

For the first fourteen episodes, I fought fellow Hearwaxian Alec McKay on why the show was good, and not a piece of shit trying to be the next Lost.  I felt that the concept had so much potential, even more than Lost at its core.  What I didn’t take into account was how the writers would abort good plot ideas, instead opting for better, more intriguing options.  Why? Because the better stories would take longer to break down and develop.  This leads me to believe that either: a) The writers are lazy b) The studio doesn’t care about the quality of their shows or c) They believe that their core audience is idiotic and doesn’t like to follow a grossly complex story and piece the puzzle together themselves.

And yet, the show is trying to be the next Lost – a program that is followed religiously because of its little puzzles and intricacies – because of it finishing up this year.

Now, I loved the first season of Lost, but got disinterested when the sci-fi stuff started to become prominent.  However, it had an excuse for struggling a bit at the beginning of the second season – the show’s success was not remotely expected.  Using common sense,  and the desired success for Flashforward, you’d figure that they would write a story that could be intriguing for a really long time.  And yet, they have lost my interest.  Me – a firm supporter and hopeful advocate of the show’s possibilities, but after giving them break after break for horrible and painfully obvious revelations, I had to relinquish my position as a fan.  The ending of “Queen Sacrifice” was atrocious and atypical – something that this show is supposed to avoid.  They are tossing aside plot ideas as quickly as possible, going at a pace that lets them recycle cliche ideas before you can say “wow that was shitty”.

Regardless of the ways that the show takes the ending of last week’s episode, it can’t go anywhere special.  I will still watch till this season concludes.  I want to be wrong about this show, I really do.  I just hope they start treating their audience with a little more respect.  If they do, they’ll get mine back.

Oh how this show continues to disappoint me episode after episode. I am going to blame the poor writing on the network trying to get good ratings. That is how I will explain it to myself.

Not surprised that this show isn’t going to be renewed.
