There was very little hype for the new comedy I Love You Man, which, if you think about it, is kind of bizarre. It combines the likes of up-and-comers Paul Rudd (Role Models, 40 Year Old Virgin) and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) into a comedy about bromance – a winning combination. Still, with the lack of hype for this comedy versus the massive hype for many comedies over the last few years (maybe the lack of the words “Judd” and “Apatow” has something to do with it?), it left very low expectations for someone seeing it (i.e. me). Not only does it surpass them, but it nearly makes you piss yourself on the way.
The basic plot summary is this: Peter (Paul Rudd) is going to get married, but realizes he has no friends other than his gay brother Robbie (Andy Samberg) and father (J.K. Simmons). So, to find a best man, he searches for a new bff to stand next to him at the alter. The first few mandates don’t work out, but then he finally meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), an animalistic man who dresses like a bum and has a jerk-off station. A real man’s man. From then on, laughs ensue on a frequent basis. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but it is damn hilarious.
I Love You, Man is funny. In fact, it is one of the funniest movies in awhile. Maybe it’s because of the lack of hype. Maybe it’s because of the lack of Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen. Regardless, Paul Rudd and Jason Segel will have you in stitches for a major portion of this comedy. Definitely recommended.
