Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Few bands are able to create two straight album-of-the-year worthy efforts in a row.  Even fewer are able to make the second one miles ahead of the first after being publicly billed as the favourite band of a member of Radiohead.  Of course, what I’m getting at is that Grizzly Bear has done this with Veckatimest, an album that is composed so close to perfection that it almost feels fake (you know what I mean? Like fake fruit, flowers, tits, etc).

If you have never listened to Grizzly Bear, just think of a full band – not just a dude with a guitar – that plays indie folk music, with gorgeous three-part harmonies sprinkled throughout every song (every member in the band sings), often utilizing many different instruments.  Their previous effort, 2006’s Yellow House, was hailed by pretty much everyone on the planet for doing all of these things really well.  Veckatimest should be hailed by everyone for creating the new standard to which other folky indie bands should try to achieve, but never will.

I am going to skip a track-by-track analysis and instead recommend listening to the catchy single “Two Weeks” (just try not to sing along to the beautiful chorus), the heartbreaking “Fine For Now”, or the upbeat “While You Wait for the Others” and try not to fall in love with the versatility and poppiness of Veckatimest, and even moreso, Grizzly Bear.

The majority of indie pop/folk bands should be scared to release a record now that Veckatimest has been heard by everyone.  It is an effort that is going to compete for album of the year for just about everyone.  It’s just that damn good.

This is an oldass review, but I hardly find "While You Wait For the Others" upbeat. It gives the impression that it's upbeat, but there's something so tragic about that chorus.

This is still my favourite album of the year. It is so beautiful, happy, and depressing all at the same time. I agree with what you say about the chorus, but it is still upbeat imo
