Yesterday, Toronto’s very own After Dark Film Festival showcased its annual collection of international cult, gore, sci-fi, and horror shorts at the Bloor Cinema. As usual it didn’t dissapoint with some spectucularly bizarre and and stunning stretches of imagination on celluloid. Here is a quick review of each of the 10 films and links to footage where available. United …
“What does this have to do with skateboarding?” This is the line which stuck out the most to me after leaving the theater from the beyond bizarre experience which is Machotaildrop (2009). The film follows an aspiring teenage skateboarder named Walter Rhum in an alternate 90s reality in which skateboarding is the primary focus of everything… or is …
When the credits are rolling at the end of documentary and you’d be willing to sit through another hour of talking head interviews, you know it is a good documentary. The People vs. George Lucas (2010) is a good documentary. Coming to Toronto as part of Hot Docs 2010, Alexandre O. Phillippe’s film centers around …
Women Without Men is a gorgeous film with deeply personal narratives and a visual style you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Its also a very well crafted film and entertaining even if you have no interest or knowledge in Iranian history. I highly recommend checking it out.
Sherlock Holmes (2009) – Guy Ritchie Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law play House and Wilson respectively in late 19th century CG London. Rachel McAdams has breasts. It’s the greatest fucking movie of all time. It’s that simple. Citizen Kane was a joke, 8 ½ was shallow, Star Wars had crappy effects, and 400 Blows was child’s play. You will laugh. You will cry. You will ponder the meaning of life and love. You will throw spoons at the screen and cry …
Everyone loves Zombies. They instantly add additional points of awesome to any movie, and it’s almost impossible to mess them up (though some movies certainly try). But why are we so enthralled by the cinematic undead? Is it their immediate kitsch value? The zombies’ insatiable animalism and hunger? The mindlessness of the violence? The gratuity …
The 420 Film Festival! The Bloor Cinema keeps the awesomeness coming from the After Dark Film Festival last weekend with the 420 Film Festival this weekend. It all kicks off Saturday night at 9:20 with a new Canadian 20 minute long Silent Marijuana Western, scored with some funky vintage reefer tunes. Following this there is …
