Cults – Cults
I have to say, with a name like Cults, I expected this duo to be the latest hipster-approved noise rock band to gain attention in the indie community. What I got was some of the finest pop that has made its way out in the last decade. At only three tracks and under nine minutes in length, this is a huge sentiment for a seven inch that hardly carries any audible weight on it, and yet still is as enjoyable as a full-length LP from 99% of the other indie pop bands flying around today.
“Go Outside” is the track that got this band noticed, and it is the number that opens up the seven inch. Equal parts xylophone, adorable vocals, and 60s inspired bass and drums, it will compete for pop song of 2010 when all is said and done – and its competition may be “Most Wanted” and “The Curse” – the other two tracks on the EP. “Most Wanted” charms with piano, while the latter’s dual vocals and organ only add to the (by this point) signature charm that Cults has throughout these three tracks.
The amount of mystery around Cults might strike one as a little pretentious and overdone (in addition to the 7″ being released in 2012 according to the band’s Bandcamp page), but the music is so enjoyable that it more than makes up for any doubts you may have. This is 60s-flavoured pop that needs to make its way onto a full-length.
