Sherlock Holmes (2009) – Guy Ritchie

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law play House and Wilson respectively in late 19th century CG London. Rachel McAdams has breasts. Very entertaining but runs a bit long in the second half, with too much lead up to the inevitable sequel. Nothing like his previous work, but there are still elements of Ritchie’s signature style. Downey Jr is the reason to see it however, so if you like him go, and if not go spend $15 on Avatar and then see it.

A Serious Man (2009) – The Coen Brothers

Probably their most beautiful and deep film. Their bizarre style fits perfectly in 1970s middle America, serving to discuss fate, mortality and the big question rather than progressing their usual fantastical narratives. If you are not Jewish or a Coen Brother’s fan however you might miss a bit of the humor and charm. Still playing at the Bloor Cinema (only $6 admission for members!) so catch it while you can.

Me and Orson Welles (2008) – Richard Linklater
Christian McKay completely steals the show. Go see this for him alone as he plays a completely compelling and entertaining Welles. Zac Efron is a cutie but not exactly memorable, though he is somewhat coming into his own now. He might be a decent actor in 6 years. Linklater’s style is somewhat lost on yet another mainstream tile (Slacker this is not), but he pulls off a period piece rather convincingly. Seriously though Christian McKay is awesome, go see him.

Avatar (2009) – 500 Million Dollars (in Dr. Evil Voice)

Umm… its Pocahontas meets Spirits Within? When I gather enough cash from standing on the corner to pay for the IMAX 3D with Tartar Sauce combination and the lines lessen by a mile I’ll give you a full review. So coming soooooon…..
