Spotlight – Little Foot Long Foot

Behold a new feature to appear on this site on a whenever-seems-good basis. What stems from this piece is a series of articles featuring relatively under-the-radar indie bands that deserve a good word or two put in for them, just for the hell of it. Today we begin with a two-piece band operating out of Toronto known as Little Foot Long Foot. While often easily mistaken for a band of more regular numbers, they are simply comprised of Joan Smith whom manages guitars, vocals, and various witticisms. Isaac Klein handles drums and tomfoolery.
From the get-go, this is a band that grabs you from the shoulders and screams “Agggghhhh! Fun time!” Or, something to that effect one would suppose. They are a band with country swagger married with traditional garage rock sounds that are sure not to take themselves too seriously as they skew topics such as marriage, the local music scene, and of course…hipsters. While the word “swagger” may be easily thrown around for a number of people, Little Foot Long Foot seem to display it justifiably as their one music video and batch of youtube videos suggest; they have fun, and definitely try their best not to come off as too serious.
The band has two discs out now; Just About Broke (a 7-track EP released last year) and a full length LP known as Harsh Words. Little Foot Long Foot play their music with a figurative gun strapped to their back as they come at you with an intensity that normally would beg for trouble, if it weren’t already clear that they’re really just looking for a dirty good time. In fact, what becomes clear from the onset of most of their songs is that you’re going to get wanged in the head with a guitar, because there would be no other way to understand what’s coming at you. In fact, there’s so much dirty guitar sound you’d swear you were in a bar-room brawl without the star of “Roadhouse” able to come to your rescue. But it’s cool, because everyone’s “play-fighting”.

It’s a little confusing to hear a band that sounds so serious, and yet in all their press photography, their smattering of videos on youtube, they’re genuinely enjoying themselves with an impressively healthy amount of fun to it all. And that’s an extremely key point here, authenticity. Not only do they clearly have the talent, but they’re clearly enjoying themselves, which means it all comes from a very “real” place, and any music that comes from there is hard to muck up.

For those interested that don’t mind a bit of short notice, Little Foot Long Foot are actually playing The Rivoli on Saturday November 7th. They’re playing the Canary Mine CD release party with Vedette. Doors are at 9pm, and cover is $10.
